What is people first language?

Putting people first
People first language is language used to highlight the person rather than define them through an illness or diagnosis.

Using people first language:

  • helps separate the person from a diagnosis
  • rids the person of generalizations/labels
  • helps focus on abilities instead of disabilities
Why it is important to use people first language

Language is very influential and we must be strategic when practicing it. Using people first language allows us to respectfully address some one who has a disability or an illness. It is important to note that not all disorders or disabilities are apparent.
Practicing people first language can change our mindsets, to think differently of people with other abilities. Using people first language can help avoid stereotypes and stigmatizing comments. Here are some great examples on how we can use people first language.
